What with one thing and another…

cover to the hundred thousand kingdoms by n.k. jemisinI ended up reading this weekend. I finished a book I’ve needed to read for several months (more on that one later, closer to its release), and then I wanted something fast-paced and gory, but couldn’t find anything that sounded perfect, so I ended up opening a fantasy novel I’ve had sitting around for a little while (thanks to Ana’s review at the Book Smugglers): THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS by N.K. Jemisin.

And I didn’t put it down again. I even did the reading-while-stirring-the-pot thing over the stove while making dinner. I’m not good at reviewing, and Ana’s review pretty much says everything I would. The non-linear storytelling frame Jemisin uses is just … amazing. Within a few short sentences, she sucked me in. And now, having reached the end, I want to go back and read it again with everything that happened in the course of the story in mind, because I have a feeling it will be like reading it for the first time all over again, peeling back a thick layer of the story that I hadn’t seen before.

Seriously, just a great book.

Seriously, how awesome is this book? SO glad you liked it, the non-linear storytelling got me from the start. And I am now dying for the sequels – the next one is Itempas’ and the third one Sieh’s! Woot.

also: Nahadoth. Swoon.

Oh, good!

I was just mentioning on Jill Myles’s Goodreads account that I couldn’t drum up much excitement for the sequel if it followed Yeine, because although I loved how it ended, I didn’t know if I wanted to follow her after the climax [vague here for spoilery reasons].

But Itempas, yes. (And hopefully mortal Naha!) And Sieh, too? Color me super, super happy.

I agree with Ana and you. Doesn’t it remind you of anime? The whole situation reminded me of the RG Veda manga and anime by CLAMP, but with a fresh twist (and not quite as many gods to confuse the heck out of me).

I was lucky to go to an author event that NK was at and she read from The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I really need to read this one.

Hi,

I have never heard of this book or author so I might just have to go check them out if they are worthy of reading whilst cooking supper (I do that too, especially if the book has sucked me right in)!
