I haven’t read any steampunk before but I’ve seen it talked about so much lately that I’m very curious about it!

I’ve read just one steampunk book and it was YA, but not any romance steampunk yet. I pretty much throw everything that has the slightest semblance to steampunk in that category; I wouldn’t even know where to break off and say, “nope, that’s ‘gaslight’ not steampunk” lol

3|

Oooh! This anthology is on my August Wish list! I’d love to get my hands on a copy!!!!!!

I’ve tot yet read steampunk, but have been hearing many a great thing! to be honest, I am not certain I’d know how to properly define the genre!

Thanks
Kate aka YzhaBella

4|

i have not, but i like the fashions. miyazaki’s “howl’s moving castle” was probably the last steampunk-ish film i’ve seen.

5|

Came over from DA since I’m intrigued by your new series. I’ve never read steampunk (that I can think of?) but what little I know of it, I like!

6|

I haven’t read any steampunk romance yet (you will be my first).
There seems to be many definitions of steampunk but honestly, I am just loking for something special and fresh to read in the romance world.

7|

I ‘ve heard of Steampunk before. I just don’t quite have my head wrapped around it for a proper definition but I liked yours. I did like your interview and I can’t wait to read about your heroine’s Ivy and Mina.

Did you write them with any real person in mind?

8|

I know squadoo about steampunk, other than the clothes always look cool. It’s all on your series to convince me it’s awesome, BUT NO PRESSURE. :D

9|

I haven’t read any steampunk yet either, but I love the concept. Your definition really seems to nail it.

10|

I’d love to win a copy to share with friends!

11|

Yes, I’ve read steampunk (f.i “Leviathan” and “the league”). Since I read the review of your story at the Book Smugglers, I’m looking forward to this anthology !
I quite like your definition. It’s never easy to explain steampunk to someone who has never heard of it (and it’s worse if you are the only SFFF reader among your friends ^^ )

12|

I have not read Steampunk. I have actually just recently been introduced to your writing in the compilation “Must Love Hellhounds” looking forward to reading more. Thank you for the chance to win.

13|

I just want a copy…

14|

Oh I’m looking forward to this anthology! I’d love to have a copy

I have some steampunk on my TBR pile and I’ve read a few short stories, but I think I need to read more to form opinions.

15|

I’ve read steampunk before, and have enjoyed it quite a bit. I’m looking forward to your new release.

16|

Read your interview at Dear Author — loved it. Have not tried any steampunk romance before but your books sound great. I enjoy reading fantasy, SF, romance and all mixes thereof. Loved watching the old “Wild, Wild West” and the times that inventions and science showed up on “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.”.
Thank you for the contest and giving everyone a chance to try out your novella.

17|

I’m excited about reading your new Steampunk series, it’s sounds fantastic.

18|

I have read several Steampunk books, some I love, others…well, not so much. I think it depends on the author! Loved the interview!

19|

I haven’t read a Steampunk books before, but I am open to reading about almost every genre out there. Will be checking out your interview after posting this on here. :)

20|

I have not read steampunk before, but I love the style. I have a lot of steampunk art and crafting/making sites in my bookmarks and a lot of steampunk Etsy shops in my favorites.

My favorite are the modified computers, motorcycles, etc on the steampunkworkshop website. I think their definition is ‘Technology and Romance’, which is also perfect for your books.

The reading options these days just keep getting better and better for someone who loves both sci-fi and romance! I can’t wait for tomorrow!

21|

I’ve never read steampunk before but there are a couple of releases that I am looking forward to. There is yours of course as well as The Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare.

22|

I don’t think i’ve read steampunk or if I have I didn’t know but it does sounds intriguing. And I’d definitely read it since you wrote it.

23|

I have not read any steampunk yet. But I have read a lot about it and it looks interesting. I am looking forward to trying it out.

24|

I recently finished my very first steampunk… Soulless by Gail Carriger. Amazing. Never thought I’d like it, but I do. All that fun alternate history stuff, cool gadgets, and whatnot. Must. Have. More. Steampunk.

And then I discovered YOU do steampunk and I squeed. Like a fan girl. It was kind of embarrassing.

25|

I’ve read some steampunk and I just love it. I’m so happy that you’re writing it, cause I just love your books!

26|

I have read some steampunk and it was lovely, but to be honest I get all tangled up in my brain parts when I try to decipher the differences between steampunk, alternative historical fantasy, etc. etc.

27|

I haven’t read steampunk yet, but the genre sounds very interesting.

28|

I do read steampunk and I LOVE it! Got my grubby little hands on an ARC of Cassandra Clare’s Clockwork Angel and about had a coronary. So pretty…and it’s all mine! ::cue evil laughter::

29|

@MarnieColette: I didn’t write Mina or Ivy with real people in mind — though, in a very general way, their experiences have been influenced by stories and the experiences of real people. But it’s a combination — there’s no one individual that I could point to and say, “That’s Mina.”

That’s true of all of my characters, though. I might read a story that sparks an idea of a hero/heroine, but only a spark. The rest is fleshing them out according to the rules of the world they are in.

30|

I’ve read Soulless and Changeless, but I couldn’t get into Boneshaker (though my daughter loved it). Anxious to try yours out!

31|

@Shéa: Ah, don’t be embarrassed. I squee like a fangirl whenever I meet someone who has actually read and liked my books. Believe me — I’m a fan of you, to a dorkily ridiculous extent :-D

32|

@JennyME: As I said in the interview, I think that the strict definitions of steampunk romance are going to ease as more and more authors begin writing in the subgenre. For example, Zoe Archer has a series coming up that is part adventure, part fantasy, and with elements of steampunk in the gadgets and technology.

Is it steampunk by strict definition? Probably not. But is it fun and a hell of a good read? Absolutely. And that’s the important thing, I think — authors telling great stories. Whether they perfectly fit into a steampunk definition is less important, IMO.

Some people will call it steampunk romance, others will call it alternative history fantasy romance. But what they call it won’t matter as much as whether they love the books or not.

33|

Long ago I read some of Tim Power’s novels. More recently I have read The Mortal Engines/Hungry City novels by Philip Reeve, Airborn by Kenneth Oppel, and Soulless by Gail Carriger. I love all sorts of speculative fiction.

34|

I’ve been waiting for your steampunk series for what feels like forever! I’ve read “The Diamond Age,” “Soulless,” and a handful of others. I’m really looking forward to Steampunk ROMANCE–because I love me some HEAs.

35|

I haven’t actually read any steampunk, although I do have Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld here to read soon.

Would love to give your story a go.

36|

I like the idea of steampunk but haven’t actually managed to get myself to the point where I’ve read one. I think.

I am very definitely getting The Iron Duke though :-)

37|

I really want this anthology. So want to read your story,it sounds awesome.

Steampunk to me is the future but with corsets and victorian clothing. Steam trains, old fashion weapons… Basically a mix of the cool past mixed with the possible future.

Never read steampunk but I got The Iron Duke on my must buy list. ^_^

38|

My introduction to steampunk was the Girl Genius webcomic. I read that for a few years without having any idea that it was part of a larger genre. Then I started hearing the word “steampunk” tossed around from time to time, but I still didn’t really get it.

Then a dressmaker friend of mine was commissioned for a Victorian dress with chains and gadgets and whatnot to be worn to a convention. That was illuminating to me because my friend’s pieces are far from cheap. If someone was willing to spend that much money on a costume for the weekend, this was probably something big. Then I read Soulless and something clicked in my head. Like, “I get it now!”

39|

I would LOVE to win this! *thinks* Okay, well I admit to being behind-the-times on steampunk, though Ana (from the Book Smugglers) is gradually working on me. ;) I’ve always felt a little… wary of what exactly it is, though I’ve learned a lot more about it in recent months.

I have an advanced copy of Caitlin Kittredge’s YA steampunk novel floating around on my hard drive, so I really must read that soon… Knowing Caitlin (who is a good friend of Cherie Priest’s), it’ll be a good representation of ‘true steampunk’.

Good luck with the new series, Meljean!

Cheers,
Kaz

I’ve never picked up a book within the Steampunk genre, but I’m a hell of a lot intrigued by the name and your definition of it. As for Steampunk Romance… I think that’s a natural extension within the Steampunk genre as a whole (as with other genres throughout the years). There’s always going to be progressions, some that people will like and others that won’t. For me, the addition of romance just makes the package that much sweeter.

41|

I know I’ve read a story or two that would match your steampunk definition, but I can’t think of what they were (darn memory). I can’t wait for your story though! It sounds great.

42|

I haven’t finished any steampunk books but I saw an anime (Fullmetal Alchemist) that was steampunk. Actually when I read about the robot arms I instantly remembered Fullmetal’s hero who has a robot arm and leg.

43|

I haven’t read steampunk before, but I have heard great recommendations for it from my friends – and this book/series by one of my favorite authors seems the perfect way to dive into a new genre!!

44|

Steampunk was an accidental find for me about six months ago, combining two interests – science fiction and history. I’ve been intrigued by the Butterfly Effect, one seemingly minor change affecting an entire society since I read Ray Bradbury’s story many many years ago. .

45|

Anubis Gates is an excellent steampunk-esque novel. And of course, one simply must employ the fashions in addition to reading the literature. *pushes her goggles up*

I am soooo looking forward to The Iron Seas series. I’ve been such a huge fan of the Guardian Series, that I *know* I’m going to love it!

:)

46|

I have not read a steampunk book or one of yours really. Just a short story in a anthology book that i really enjoyed. I guess i really need to find some more of your books and check into your writing more. I love to find fresh styles of writing.

47|

Hi there,

I really love steampunk and how it combines the magic of yester year with the techology of today. I really enjoyed Katie MacAlister’s “Steamed: a Steampunk romance” and Michael Pryor’s “Laws of Magic Series”

Thank you

Tarran

48|

Sign me up. The novella got a great review from Dear Author.

49|

Can’t wait to read it!

50|

I’ve read any steampunk before. The sample of your story has made realy want to try it out

51|

I’ve read quite a bit of steampunk and am looking forward to The Iron Duke. Also, this story.

52|

I have only just started reading steampunk literature, but I have finished Boneshaker, the newly-released YA novel World Shaker by Richard Harland, and I am now onto Leviathan (with a whole box of books in the ‘to be read’ pile). What I have enjoyed most about this genre is that my husband has discovered that he likes it too and for the first time in our twenty-year marriage we are reading the same books and having discussions about them (he is actually outpacing me and demanding more!!!!) I’m a graduate student in English, and I’ve never had this experience before– it is so cool to share a love of the same kind of lit!

53|

Can’t say I’ve read very many (titles aren’t even coming to me right now lol) or that there are a lot of steam punk novels out there; I read a lot and I just don’t seem to encounter very many. SO I can’t say I have an opinion on the genre though I know what it is.

There’s that film by Hayao Miyazaki which I would say was Steampunk, new film coming up Sucker Punch is also very them punk inspired.

What I can say is that I love the fashion!

54|

I haven’t read any steampunk before. But it seems to be the next big thing in books.I seen so many about to be released.

55|

I’ve never read steampunk before, although I DID read the excerpt in back of Demon Blood and it was great. I’m looking forward to both the anthology and The Iron Duke.

btw. . . Demon Blood was one of your best yet! I enjoyed Rosalia and Deacon so very much. I didn’t want it to end.

56|

I’ve never read steampunk, but I’m really looking forward to it! I hope the steampunk romance genre grows because it’s seems like such an exciting subject.

57|

I haven’t tried any true steampunk yet, but it’s on my list for expanding my comfort zone, I have several books on my TBB wishlist! Can’t wait to give it a try!

58|

Have you read steampunk before?
I have, but only one or so books so far. My favorite was STEAMED, a Steampunk Romance by Katie MacAlister. I love her! hehe
I love this giveaway, thanks for the chance to win!

[meljean edited out e-mail address]

59|

I have never read any steampunk books before, but I’m really excited about your new series! I think your definition of steampunk seems to be an excellent. I wasn’t sure exactly what steampunk was, other than in terms of clothing and jewelry.

60|

Ah, steampunk. It’s a subgenre I’m getting more and more into: Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate was a great introduction. I’m such a girl, though…my favorite steampunk things include the “Soulless” Victorian Dress-Up Doll ( http://www.orbitbooks.net/soulless/ ) and all the funky jewelry I find on Etsy ( http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query=steampunk&search_type=category&category=jewelry.ring ). “Steampunk” has become synonymous with “massive time-suck” for me. :)

I also appreciated your interview at Dear Author today; your comment about maintaining the balance—allowing the worldbuilding to shape the romantic tension—and presenting the information at the same time was insightful, something I hope I can use in my own work eventually.

Can’t wait to read “Burning Up” and, eventually “The Iron Duke” (when it comes out)!

61|

@J. Elis Morgan: Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! :-)

62|

I haven’t read much steampunk beyond the boundaries of Girl Genius and Katie McAllister’s recent foray into steampunk, but I’m intrigued by the possibilities. My perception is a darker one than what I’ve read.

Last night I saw steampunk band Clockwork Dolls perform in a show arranged by friends/coworkers and the music and stage play-acting made me even more eager for some upcoming releases.

On a totally random, sort of weirdly stalkerish note: one day last week I had a bizarre dream that I walked into a bank and you were the bank clerk. Truly out of left field.

63|

@Edie H: Oh, that dress up doll kills me! So much fun. And I won’t — WON’T, I TELL YOU! — click on it again, because I’ll spend way, way too long playing with it.

64|

@Emily Ryan-Davis: True fact: I used to BE a bank clerk.

Dun dun DUNNNNH!

Re: steampunk and the darkness of it — I think that the tone is a little lighter than the Guardian series, but is still on the darker/grittier side of romance than Katie M’s, Carriger’s, or the Girl Genius books. And the novella is lighter than THE IRON DUKE is.

65|

I’ve read a lot of steampunk, and I quite like it. I also regularly take a look at SteamPunk Magazine, just because it’s pretty awesome and has great ideas for writing steampunk. Never have seen a literary steampunk romance, but I think the movie Steamboy might come close…

Im definitely going to have to read your books now! Thanks for the contest! :)

66|

Yes, I’ve read steampunk. In fact I was fortunate enough to edit an awesome Steampunk novella coming out later this year. But I haven’t read Burning Up so please, pick me! pick me! *waves arms madly*

67|

I’ve never read steampunk, unless you consider Verne’s oeuvre as part of, or progenitor of the subgenre. But I do enjoy your work and would love to have a copy. :)

68|

I want to say I have read it before, but nothing comes to mind. Does The Golden Compass count? Perhaps, I watched a few movies or something similar. I believe I have read a short story or two.

I’m very excited about all the new steampunk coming out, though!

69|

I’ve never read steampunk, but find it very interesting. Would love to read BURNING UP.

70|

I have collected steampunk jewelry for years. It wasn’t until about six months ago that I realized it had a name.

I haven’t read any steampunk books yet, but I’m actively looking for what I think will be a good introduction to the genre.

71|

For having only really read Girl Genius as far as Steampunk is concerned, I have my days where I get SUPER obsessed and spend way too much time looking at pretty arts and fashions. That being said, I’m really excited that steampunk romance is taking off and am looking forward to reading much much more of it in the future. :)

72|

Oh, I want this book SO BADLY! Thanks for the opportunity. The only steampunk I’ve read is the excerpt of IRON DUKE in the back of Demon Blood. And since I the only think I know about steampunk comes from you… I agree with your definitions whole-heartedly! LOL I am very excited for this anthology. Thanks!

73|

I have never read steampunk before but I am curious and want to try.

74|

I’ve read Steampunk Lite before (Gail Carriger’s books, Leviathan by Scott Westerfield, etc.) but am eager to try other titles in the genre. I’ve got The Affinity Bridge by George Mann on my TBR pile right now.

75|

I have read some steampunk before, but only a few things. From what I have read, I really like it though. I am anxiously awaiting to get my hands on Burning Up though!! :)

76|

This would be a first for me, count me in! tWarner419@aol.com

77|

I have never read steampunk. I have noticed they have some awesome covers. Would love to give it a try.

78|

I haven’t read any of the current Seampunk books, but was a fan of the Wild West series. Really liked James West’s outfits :)
I’ve read similar type stories back in the day, but they were considered Sci-Fi more often than not. There wasn’t so much breakdown of catagories then.
I have to admit I’m not a fan of the sub-sub genre classifications. I think it just makes it harder to find the books.
Great interview. It helps having an idea what the sub-g’s are being considered. Thank you for offering everyone a chance to win Burning Up.. it’s very much appreciated.. Good luck everyone.

79|

I haven’t ready any Steampunk yet, although I have quite a few Steampunk titles are on my wishlist. I’d love a copy of Burning Up!

80|

I haven’t read steampunk yet but I’ve heard a lot about it. I haven’t gone to the bookstore yet to get a book but I am planning to since so many authors are starting to venture into this type genre.

Ann

81|

I haven’t read any of the steampunk however I did pick up the one from Katie MacAlister.

I do love your other books if that counts. :)

82|

I have read one Steampunk type romance and found it interesting. It was part of a new series and I’m waiting for the next book.

83|

I’ve never read steampunk before, but this book is totally on my must-have list! Thanks for the chance to win. :)

84|

I’ve read some Steampunk romance – Katie MacAlister’s Steamed fit right in to what I think of as Steampunk. I’ve read Gail Carriger’s Soulless and Changeless, and even though they have vampires, werewolves and ghosts, I think they fit in just fine. I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve done with your stories, I think they’re going to be fantastic.

85|

I’ve read a few steampunk and have several on my TBR list.
I like it, which is surprisingly as I’m not into Victoriana and I would love to read some more.

86|

Nothing like the last minute! I think I am making the deadline, I’m midwest, so different time zone. Don’t know that I know exactly what steampunk is honestly, but your books are always on my wish list and I would love to read the newest!

87|

@Sherry Roginski: Just in time!

I’m closing the comments now. Thank you so much to everyone who entered!
