Talking about the Guardians
This is part of an interview I did with Project Paranormal — the extra stuff, I think, that didn’t fit in the Project Paranormal cut. I can barely look, but here’s the video!

this was awesome! i loved hearing about the genesis of the guardians series (pun intended, har), and that PARADISE LOST was a major influence. milton was one of my favorite classes in undergrad.
also, i’m in grad school right now working on my dissertation, and i find myself constantly wishing i could be attempting a novel instead. too bad i don’t have the talent you do, lol!
That video was WONDERFUL, and I think it’s a great intro to the complex backstory of your world. Good job explaining it all!
Also, your hair is totally cute. I’m thinking of having mine cut, so I was staring at your hair most of the time and planning on screen-capping you so I can take a pic to my hairdresser. LOL!!

@gladys: I wish I could say that I was a superwoman or something, but after I got the contract for the first books, I *did* have to leave grad school. Between the baby (a toddler then, and who NEVER slept — despite every attempt we made to put her down at night, she’d regularly stay awake until 5-6 AM, and then sleep the day away while at the in-laws’, and I was trying to stay awake in classes), school, work, and the books on top of it, I had to decide where my priorities were … and the master’s degree ended up being at the bottom.
I don’t really regret not finishing it (though I miss the classes and discussions — the papers, not so much); it ended up being the right choice for me. If we had 36 hour days, maybe I could have done it … I just don’t have that much fortitude, lol.
@Karen Mahoney: Thank you! I feel like I look very pink in it
ha, but it turned out much, much better than I expected. I felt like a nervous, babbling wreck all the way through, but I’m surprisingly coherent here. It’s good editing, I think.
I had my hair done the day before this filmed. I gave my hairdresser these two pictures:
and
and to please do a combination of the two. I like how it turned out (though before this filmed, I spent the morning walking through Seattle wind/mist, and it didn’t look quite like what I started out with) but it’s very easy to work with this cut. Any longer, and I get to the “if I don’t pull it back into a ponytail or something, it looks like scraggly crap” phase. So I keep it relatively short most of the time.
Thank you SO much for those pics. I will add them to my file of images that I’ll be taking to my hairdresser.
Yeah, I totally get what you mean about: “if I don’t pull it back into a ponytail or something, it looks like scraggly crap” phase. Heh. Sadly, I know all too well. I’m pretty much at that right now & have to make a decision to keep growing it really long – with all the hard work that entails (YUCK! I am so lazy about things like hair and makeup), or get it cut off. But I can’t have it too short because I have a round face. (My ex says – fondly, I hasten to add – that when I smile it’s like the moon has come out. Grrr… LOL!)
Anyway. TMI!
Thanks. And you really did sound good in the video – not babbling or nervous at all. I know I’ll feel the same if I ever have to do something like that. *shudders*
i’m dealing with a toddler too while trying to finish, but i cannot imagine what you were going through. not that mine is the best sleeper in the world (he’s definitely not), but i don’t know how you were able to stay awake for ANYTHING during the day, let alone classes, work, writing, etc. you have more fortitude than i do, that’s for sure!
and if i were discovered by an editor like cindy hwang before finishing my degree, i think i would walk away from school, as well. or instead of writing, i’d want her job.
wow — I loved this. You sounded great. I love the hint of a great showdown. I know I can’t possibly weight.
That was fantastic! I loved hearing about the genesis of the world of the Guardians. From Batman and Wonder Woman. Duuuuuude. That is so groovy.
Now I will never get the image of Hugh in tights out of my head. Gack!
