Halloween (the Moon edition)
Every once in a while, you come across a concept that is so freaking cool, that you bang your head and wonder why you didn’t think of it. I ran across one of those today when I read an interview at Occasional Superheroine, regarding a new Zuda.com webcomic by David Gallaher and Steve Ellis called High Moon.
Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like, but here is a description from Ellis (the artist) on the High Moon blog:
It’s … a supernatural western/horror, involving six guns and werewolves … it starts out as a mystery and I think it will be a blast when we reveal the final twist.
I love Ellis’s art anyway, so of course I’m a shoo-in fan. They do one issue at a time (8 pages) and then if it gets enough votes it continues.
Other stuff: Kerry Allen has a fantastic review of Demon Moon over at her blog, but the fun news is that, apparently, Colin will be her HOTM on Nov 2. (Her blog’s a load of good times, anyway, so a visit (even without Colin) is well worth it.)
This is maybe a different kind of moon (and one I want to avoid), but to the gentleman at the Borders’ cafe, who sat in the chair next to me whilst I was writing, and proceeded to tear off the plastic wrapping on a Penthouse magazine: No. Just — no. You couldn’t wait until you got home? Until you got into your car? Or maybe on the bus, where everyone expects that kind of stuff? Gah. Do Not Want.

I would describe it as more of an “enthusiastic, if poorly written and untimely, endorsement,” but fortunately for you, I’m not in charge of your marketing!
See, I would describe it as ‘freaking awesome’ but that’s just me
Sounds kinda interesting, but I admit to never being a big western fan.
I have to check out Kerry’s blog. HelenKay was talking out it the other day too.
Oooh. Pretty art plus werewolves. Must read! Possibly it will get the last western-werewolf thing I read out of my head…though the fact that there’s more than one “western-werewolf thing” is a bit disturbing.
Also, Penthouse? Thank you for giving me my amusing mental image of the night. (As long as it happened to somebody else, I am WAY too amused by this.)
(More parentheses to tell you that I was scanning old reviews on fanfiction.net, found one from you, and wandered over. Just in case you wanted to know where I came from.)
Stacy — and HelenKay does have impeccable taste
Foxfire — ahhhhhhhhh! I love your BJT fic! I saw that you’d finished it but I wanted to re-read it in whole before I read the end.
And now I’m wondering — what was the last western-werewolf thing? The idea really intrigues me, and fits so well: the lone-wolf cowboy, all of the silver mining (so much potential there), the wild wild west bit. Just fantastic (although I wonder if a werewolf could ride a horse? It seems like they’d buck him off. Gah. Down, plot bunny! Down!)
Thanks for stopping by!
Western and werewolves really should be done better/more often – the one I read was called “Nadya” and would’ve been a good story except for the the screaming anachronisms and “my transgressive is pastede on yay!” I dislike people who pile on the allegedly outre elements just to prove how cool they are…stuff like the heroine having a lesbian interlude for no apparent reason, with never a word about any effect it might have had on her character. The core story – Polish werewolves flee persecution, immigrate, have little baby werewolf who has adventures – was great, but the execution was sufficiently clunky that I, um, threw it across the room.
And I’m glad you liked the fic! I’m just proud of getting it DONE (OK, and fending off plot bunnies who are taking advantage of the sudden increase in free brain space). I’d definitely like to know what you think of the ending, since getting encouragement from a real live published person was a HUGE boost to me while writing it.
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your kind words, Steve and I are really excited about the project … and your words and support mean a lot to us.
- David Gallaher
Hi David! Thanks for dropping by, and I really wish you success with the High Moon title (and everything else you happen to work on!) I’ll be the first to pick it up — I’ve got my fingers crossed that you’ll get the high vote at Zuda
Foxfire — oh, geez, I just love those random lesbian encounters
(Okay, actually, I kind of do, just for the WTF? factor) But pointless episodes in a story, written entirely for their cool factor? Ick.
Funny thing, I had the same thing happen to me when I was writing my fanfic — a YA author gave me some feedback, and it was a huge boost, and part of the reason I kept going on a fic that had become really long and difficult. I’m no Anne Bishop, definitely, but I thought your fic was just excellent — capturing Bishop’s flavor without copying or resorting to Mary Sue-ism (which the BJT world seems to attract like crazy.)
I’ve got it bookmarked; as soon as I can, I intend to finish it, and I’ll drop you a line
