I know tomorrow is Father’s Day, but…

…excuse me while I bawl like a baby. Hans Christian Andersen’s The Story of a Mother, illustrated here at scans_daily. The artwork alone is worth a look.

Echo, don’t read this. Really.

Wow, that is just so lovely and sad. I read the story before looking at the art, and it added such an intense new dimension. Oh, that little plant that was her child was so sad to see.

Wow, so sad. And so beautiful for what a parent will sacrifice for their child.

I just thought I’d let you know this, that we’ve been wanting to adopt a cat from the humane society, and I’ve been just SO avoiding doing it, because you know, which cat do you save? So many of them will be killed, and to know that and see all those poor cats in little cages, and knowing to pick one is to unpick another…I would just want to take all of them. Etc etc.

Anyway, I keep coming back to that little story, which oddly has helped me get my thinking straight about it, even though it’s hardly analogous. We’ll pick the one we pick. We can’t get into playing God and all that.

A bit sideways of the intent of that HCA tale, but I guess that’s the mark of a good story, people morph it for personal meaning. So hey, thanks!
