BART in San Francisco (or, how to get to RWA without using a taxi or worrying about catching a shuttle)
I was just chatting with a friend about getting from the SFO airport to the Marriot downtown without being reamed by a taxi fare, and mentioned that I was going to come in on the subway. The Powell Street station is only a block and a half from the hotel, and costs just a little over $5.

And this is an excellent step-by-step guide to using the system from SFO to Powell Street station.
Is anyone else coming in from the airport and using a handy/cheap/easy method of transportation?

Waves hand around in the air. Who wants to deal with SF traffic.
Are you not signing any of your books? Didn’t see your name on the list of authors signing on Wednesday.
I won’t be there Wednesday, but I will be at the Berkley signing at 3pm on Friday.
All I know is that I arrive at the SFO and look around cluelessly for a way to get to the Marriott. This is some great information! This is my first trip where I am travelling alone. Hopefully I won’t get lost.
It might not be a great option for anyone with a lot of luggage (I’m just going to have one piece, with wheels.) But for me, it works really well.
I think there’s a shuttle from the airport, right? Because I bought tickets to the shuttle…
The hotel site says they don’t have a shuttle, but I imagine that RWA is setting something up — that’s just too many people to not have a shuttle. But since I’m coming on an off day (and not doing the whole conference) I don’t want to take my chances with a maybe-there-is-an-airport-shuttle.
I know the bus from the airport to the hotel is $15 one way, so it maybe cheaper to take the subway.
I’m taking the BART as well.
And it’s less than a block and a half to the hotel – that map’s a little deceptive. It makes it look like the station’s just on that corner but it really stretches beneath an entire block of Market, under the entire length of the Westfield Centre. There’s an exit that’ll drop you right on 4th street.
Getting *to* the hotel won’t be a big deal, even with luggage. But be aware on your return to SFO – it’s often standing room only leaving that station.
I live 45 minutes from SF. So I’m driving to the hotel on Tuesday. But wait for Megan F’s comment, because I’m picking her up at the airport. In my shiny — er dust-covered vehicle. Hmm. Maybe I should wash the car.
I used to live in Berkeley and then San Francisco and BART is awesome. So is MUNI, when you can get a seat. I didn’t own a car for years because public transportation is so good.
Jill – I’m guessing you’ve got something from Super Shuttle? I used it last year and it’s really easy to catch (they just group together people going to the same basic area), and the price is really reasonable. This is probably a good option for folks coming off long-haul flights or with luggage. They drop you right at the hotel.
Here’s the info I got off the Super Shuttle site.
“SFO – Claim your luggage (lower level). Proceed to the upper level and outside to the curb. Follow the SuperShuttle signs to get to the SFO Airport agent (in teal green jackets) and they will arrange your SuperShuttle transportation to your destination. You will wait for your van at Terminal 1 (across from Air Canada) or Terminal 3 across from United door #3.”
BART & Super Shuttle – great info. I’m looking into both.
Yes – great! Thanks Nalini!
Bart is awesome I was there last year and it took me from the SFO straight to my friends place, an excellent system!!
