Oct 26: Wonder Woman Day

DECISION ’08
OCTOBER 26

Days left until DEMON BOUND is out: 9
Days left until the national election: 9

If you are looking for the daily vote, you’re in the right spot.

If you are looking for where you’re supposed to vote for the grand prize or post your link to the Decision ’08 widget, click here. You’ll have to scroll down to vote or post your link in the comments. If you haven’t yet read the contest rules, now is a good time to do it.

As some of you may know, today I’m attending the Wonder Woman Day event in Portland (there is also one in Fleminton, NJ), a charity event that raises awareness and money for domestic violence shelters and a crisis help line. You don’t have to attend the event to be a part of it — there is a silent auction taking place for artwork (click for details on how to place your bid).

It’s also no surprise to many of you that Wonder Woman is my favorite heroine (after all, only she and He-Man have their own categories on my sidebar), that I have a girl-crush on Gail Simone, the current writer on the Wonder Woman monthly comic book, and that I’d like to convert everyone out there to the Awesome that is Diana of Themyscira. So, with that end in mind and in honor of Wonder Woman Day, I’ve chosen two graphic novels featuring Wonder Woman … stories that are, IMO, some of the best stand-alone Wonder Woman stories out there:

THE HIKETEIA by Greg Rucka and J.G. Jones (You can see the artwork and an overview of the story here, but be aware that there are spoilers.)

or

JLA: LEAGUE OF ONE by Christopher Moeller (You can see the artwork and an overview of the story here, but be aware that there are spoilers.)

Vote for your favorite. The winner will receive the most popular choice, along with a copy of any title from my backlist (books 1-6 of the Guardian series — this does not include Demon Bound.)

My backlist suggestion: Any of them. Because all of my heroines are Wonder Women.

So, are you ready to vote? Great! But first, a word from our sponsor:

On October 26, I think the best option is:

Note: Voting does not enter you to win.

Everyone can vote, but only by leaving a comment in this post are you eligible to win whichever option receives the most votes by the end of the day.

Feel free to simply state “voted” or “present” or even a smiley to enter — or, you might choose to argue your case. Comments from dissenters, moderates, and fangirls are all welcome, but personal attacks will get you disqualified.

Don’t forget to vote in the Grand Prize poll by November 3rd — everyone can vote in that poll, even if you don’t post the widget anywhere.

For complete rules and instructions in how to receive an additional entry into the Grand Prize drawing, please visit DEMON BOUND headquarters.

Good luck!

I didn’t read both books but the League sound interesting.

3|

I read Wonder Woman comics all the time when I was a kid, then years later watched on TV (Lynda Carter).

4|

I also enjoyed the TV show in the 70′s! Man, I just feel old now, lol. Yes, I am a comic book geek from Waaaaay back. I also voted. :bmww:

5|

this is a most exciting voting/contest, i would definitely miss the votes when it’s finished!

6|

I used to watch the Wonder Woman Tv series when I was a kid. She is certainly a favorite, although I have to admit to not reading either of these books. I was drawn to Hiketeia though. The artwork on the cover is fab. Alex Ross?

I haven’t read either on of these, but I know that the League of One is quite popular at the library where I work!

LadyVampire2u — the artist for the Hiketeia is J.G. Jones. I don’t know if he colors his own work in the Hiketeia, but I have seen pieces that he paints, just as Ross does, and they are fabulous. For interior pages, though, I think it would have taken him too long to complete.

Meljean, which one would you suggest for those of us who *hanging head in shame* are only vaguely familiar with WW? You know heathens like me who know pretty much nothing beyond what the tv show covered?

17|

Azteclady — both of these are good for newbies, because each tells a complete story and everything you need to know is contained within. LEAGUE OF ONE has a few characters readers might not know well — the Flash, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern — but will probably be somewhat familiar with them.

The primary difference might be the type of story. A LEAGUE OF ONE has Wonder Woman fighting a dragon, and the external conflict feels much more fantasy-based (her internal conflict is, that to save the rest of the League, she has to betray them.)

THE HIKETEIA, while it features fantastic elements — the Erinyes/Furies, and Greek mythology is very much a part of Diana’s life — the conflict is much more modern-day: a woman approaches Diana, seeking shelter and protection … from Batman, who is determined to force the woman to return to Gotham where she can be arrested for murder (and she is guilty.) If Diana fails in her protection, the Erinyes will destroy her (Diana).

Both are very well-written — Diana’s character shines through, as does everyone else. Neither of them are stories with easy answers (and one is a tragedy, actually.)

I am a total newbie, but the cover with the boot crushing Batman’s head says “Girl Power!”

Thank you, Meljean (by the way, you *should* have mail)

Don’t enter me, please  Both of these books are awesome, and whoever wins will be a very happy camper!

Since A League of One is winning, I wanna pimp The Hiketeia  Although the art is stunning in One, The Hiketeia also has gorgeous dark colors…and the writing is superb! Very moving story. (Plus…it has THE FIGHT. :bmww: )

That is all :ninja:

Thea — one thing I love about both is that she kicks Batman’s ass.

But the part where she’s got him pinned under her boot, then he starts kissing her leg and offering supplication? It sent me to ‘shipper heaven.

A few years ago, I started a fanfic that rolls off of the Hiketeia, that will unfortunately never be finished (blame the Guardian series). The fanfic that references LEAGUE OF ONE is still up, though — a Batman/Wonder Woman ‘shipper-fest totally inspired by that and THE LAST UNICORN.

I recently got the Wonder Woman TV show DVDs. Cheesy, but loads of fun. And I’d forgotten how gorgeous Lynda Carter was. I voted for League of One, but both of these look really cool.

34|

Since the Hiketaia is the only one I’ve read, I voted for it.
