Days left until the national election: 4

OoooOOOOOoooOOOOOoooooooooooo!
Are you scared yet? You will be.
For Halloween, we have two different spooky packs of books. One set includes two of my absolute favorites — and one of those books scared the s#!t out of me when I read it as a kid … and still does. Another is a heartwarming story about a dog, a man, a woman, their romance … and the freaky-ass mutant killer coming after them.
The name on the second pack is just as familiar, I’m sure, and features the first two books in a trilogy that reminds me very much of everything I love about the books mentioned above: romance (of course), a small town terrorized by a demonic force, characters that you’re praying get out of there alive, and kids who faced the horror once and have grown up to face it again.

IT by Stephen King and WATCHERS by Dean Koontz
or

BLOOD BROTHERS and THE HOLLOW by Nora Roberts
Vote for your favorite. The winner will receive the most popular choice, along with a copy of any title from my backlist (books 1-6 of the Guardian series — this does not include Demon Bound.)
My backlist suggestion: I’m not sure which book has the creepiest/scariest scenes. In “Falling for Anthony” I remember creeping myself out imagining Colin as a weak, starving vampire crawling around the bed and then attacking Emily — and the part with the nosferatu on the battlefield … poor Anthony. In DEMON ANGEL, the scene with Lilith and Lucifer still freaks me out a little — and I blame that on Stephen King, because he’s the one that made me fear kindly-looking people. WILD THING has the scene where Lucas realizes he’s not with the woman he thought he was, and has no choice but to go with her … and, yeah, the part where Selah gets her arm chopped off is gross. I listed some of DEMON MOON’s moments in Wednesday’s post, and the glimpse of Chaos we get is almost enough — and of course, there’s the part where Sir Pup eats the wyrmwolves. Bleh. I could barely write the scene in DEMON NIGHT when Charlie is in Sammael’s SUV; I knew what was going to happen, and I didn’t want it to. Then in FIRST BLOOD, the first meeting between Annie, Jack, and the nephil still gives me the willies. So … any one of them fits, I guess.
DEMON BOUND is easily my most Halloween-y book. There’s spiders, even bigger spiders in Hell, Alice, crazy Guardians, skeletons, and lots of blood. (And it might be out now — I’ve heard reports of it in Borders, so if you did want to find it this weekend, you probably could.)
If you don’t have a Borders near you, don’t want to wait until tomorrow to see if you’ve won the spooky book pack, and are looking for more Halloween fun, you might try the HIGH MOON anniversary celebration (it ends tomorrow, but the comic is always available for free online. You can’t go wrong with a werewolf western.) The Book Smugglers are having a week-long Halloween event with reviews of at least two of the books offered today. I know there are lots of other events going on — feel free to leave a link in the comments!

OCTOBER 30
Days left until DEMON BOUND is out: 5
Days left until the national election: 5

Maybe it’s a little wrong to be calling two of these books ‘old school’ — they aren’t from the same era as the old school bodice rippers — but they are the books that readers often refer to when they hearken back to what romance ‘used to be.’ They often hold the top places in “Best of…” lists, and phrases like ‘transcend the genre’ are used with regularity when discussing them … yet there must be newer readers who haven’t yet had a chance to try either of these classic romances by Kinsale and Chase.
But this year, we’ve seen praises lavished on two newcomers (praise that is, IMO, well-deserved.) Comparisons to those old school greats are made, but also phrases like, ‘breathing new life into the historical romance genre.’ And I’m sure there are just as many readers who haven’t tried either Thomas or Bourne.
Here’s your chance. If you’ve read and loved the old school romances, you get an opportunity to try (and compare) the newbies. If you’ve read the newbies and are wondering how they compare to the classics, you can vote to win those books. If you’ve read them all, you can vote for your favorites and push them onto a reader who hasn’t tried them … or on someone who is still calling romances “bodice rippers.” And if you haven’t read any of them, you can just vote for the ones you want to read the most. Your choices are:

FLOWERS FROM THE STORM by Laura Kinsale and LORD OF SCOUNDRELS by Loretta Chase
or

THE SPYMASTER’S LADY by Joanna Bourne and PRIVATE ARRANGEMENTS by Sherry Thomas
Vote for your favorite. The winner will receive the most popular choice, along with a copy of any title from my backlist (books 1-6 of the Guardian series — this does not include Demon Bound.)
My backlist suggestion: DEMON ANGEL, because you’ve got an old school clinch on the cover (confession: I love clinches) a good portion of the book takes place in historical times, it’s as long as some of those old-school books. And my book managed to do something that NONE of these awesome novels did: it got three stars from Romantic Times. Yeah, you just TRY to get three stars, Kinsale! I betcha can’t!

Nalini Singh’s Slave to Sensation got the most overall votes, and Kresley Cole’s A Hunger Like No Other squeaked past J.R. Ward’s Dark Lover by one vote. Both Singh and Cole’s books will soon be on their way to Ceri (#16), along with a copy of any book from my backlist.
Congratulations!

Is your heart racing? Do you feel like you’re being watched? If not, you will.
Today’s contest features romantic suspense, a sub-genre that I’ve been off-and-on (and, lately, am more on). Although the book might not be the first of the author’s books, several of them are part of a trilogy, and I’ve tried to pick out the first book in that trilogy (which is why it might not be the most recent release). Your choice is between:

FIRST YOU RUN by Roxanne St. Claire and DIE FOR ME by Karen Rose
or

KILLING FEAR by Allison Brennan and SHOW NO MERCY by Cindy Gerard
Vote for your favorite. The winner will receive the most popular choice, along with a copy of any title from my backlist (books 1-6 of the Guardian series — this does not include Demon Bound.)
My backlist suggestion: DEMON MOON, because up until the very end there is still the sense of “how the hell are these two ever going to get their happily-ever-after?” Despite all odds, however, they manage to pull it off.
And before that, there is a nosferatu on a plane, wyrmwolves in the streets, a vampire drive-by shooting, a demon who is (almost) as gorgeous as Colin, and a three-against-one vampire attack where the wrong person loses. All good fun, yes?

Yesterday’s Guardian vs. Demon starter packs were neck-and-neck for most of the day, but the Guardian pack (barely) pulled ahead at the end. And Miranda C, who had comment #71, has won the Guardian starter pack and any book from my backlist!
Congratulations, Miranda! I am e-mailing you right now. If you don’t receive it, please contact me using the link on the left sidebar.

This one is a little different, my friends. Instead of voting between two different candidates, you are going to vote for two books out of five. The choices are all the first book in a highly addictive series — vote for the ones that you’d love to try (or to push on a loved one, so that they, too, can feel the agony of waiting for the next installment OMG WHEN IS IT GOING TO COME OUT CAN’T SHE WRITE ANY FASTER???)
*ahem*
So, here are the books on the ballot — you will choose two:

NAKED IN DEATH by J.D. Robb, SLAVE TO SENSATION by Nalini Singh, DARK LOVER by J.R. Ward, THE UNSUNG HERO by Suzanne Brockmann, and A HUNGER LIKE NO OTHER by Kresley Cole
Vote for your two favorites. The winner will receive the most popular choice, along with a copy of any title from my backlist (books 1-6 of the Guardian series — this does not include Demon Bound.)
My backlist suggestion: HOT SPELL, because it introduces the series, Hugh and Lilith, Michael’s sword, Colin Ames-Beaumont (the vain vampire hero of DEMON MOON), includes novellas that link to Lora Leigh’s Breed series and Emma Holly’s Demon series, and because Anthony and Emily are just so darn sweet together.

We’re halfway through Decision ‘08! Congratulations to everyone who has won books and gift certificates so far, and thank you to everyone who has played. But it’s not over yet — we’ve got seven more days and a Grand Prize to give away!
I also want to note that I’ve been having some trouble with my e-mails going through to Yahoo addresses. If you win/have won a prize in the contest but haven’t heard from me, please contact me through the “Contact Me” link on the left sidebar. I always e-mail the winner within a couple of hours after the announcement, so if you don’t receive the e-mail, please check your Bulk/Spam folders or feel free to send me a message.
Also, please remember that even if you don’t have a blog/MySpace/Facebook/wherever to post the widget, you are still eligible to win the Grand Prize just by commenting in one of the daily contests — posting the widget is just a way to earn a second entry in that Grand Prize. If you haven’t been to Demon Bound HQ to cast your vote, you can do so here:

Also, also — this Wednesday is Writerspace’s big Halloween party. I’ll be chatting for a short time from 7:30-8:00 PACIFIC. I’m not exactly sure how they distribute prizes, but I know that I’ve put in 2 copies of First Blood and 3 of Demon Bound to be given away. You don’t have to attend the chats, but you do have to register to be eligible for prizes (I think it adds you to a newsletter, but I’m not certain). And it’s not just my books; I believe there are many other authors putting their books in, as well.
Thanks again, to everyone — and I hope the next week will be as fun as the first has been!

DECISION ‘08
OCTOBER 27
Days left until DEMON BOUND is out: 8
Days left until the national election: 8

Okay, okay — so, all of my books have “demon” in the title, which might give the impression that all of my heroes are demons. (For some reason, writing that line put the song “Momma, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys” in my head.) Nope. I do have one heroine who is a demon, but other than that … the demons are the bad guys in this series. Vampires can be good or bad, Guardians can have their issues (and boy, do some of them have issues — I’m looking at Hugh, Jake, and Alice right now), but demons are for killing.
Of course, not every romance writer thinks so. Some of them have demons for heroes (I’m looking at you, Ione); they have demons possessing their heroes, (I’m looking at you, Showalter) or they run around killing demons while they may or may not be the children of demons themselves, (Burton, you know who I’m talking about.)
So today is a Guardian/Demon face-off, and your choices are between:

The Guardian starter pack: HOT SPELL (also with Emma Holly, Lora Leigh and Shiloh Walker), DEMON ANGEL, and DEMON MOON
or

PLEASURE UNBOUND by Larissa Ione, THE DARKEST TOUCH by Jaci Burton, THE DARKEST NIGHT by Gena Showalter.
Vote for your favorite. The winner will receive the most popular choice, along with a copy of any title from my backlist (books 1-6 of the Guardian series — this does not include Demon Bound.)
My backlist suggestion: WILD THING, because although it’s a side-story to the main storyline, it will fill the hole in the series between DEMON ANGEL & DEMON MOON if you win the first option. If you win the Demon pack and you haven’t read any of my Guardian series, then it’s DEMON ANGEL, all the way — and then Hugh and Lilith can hand out cans of whoop-ass to all those demons.
And, let’s put this all out on the table: I know some readers are a little wary of picking up DEMON ANGEL because of the cover. For those of you who aren’t quite comfortable with the pink and the … pink, here’s an alternative that — I think — captures the feel of the book pretty well (four-letter-word alert!) You can click to enlarge and print, then wrap around your copy of DEMON ANGEL:
