THE IRON DUKE made it through Round 2! Thank you! Round 3 begins March 24 th — I’ll be back with more bribes then, because it’ll be one heck of a matchup against MAGIC BLEEDS or ARCHANGEL’S KISS. Eep!
DABWAHA – ROUND 2
Awww…. So “Here There Be Monsters” was knocked out of the first round, and won’t be moving forward. Thank you so much to everyone who voted and fought for Eben and Ivy’s story until the very end!
The Iron Duke is still in the game, though! With only forty minutes left to go in the Round One voting, it looks like it will be up against Ilona Andrews’s Bayou Moon. Eeep! But never fear — I’ve got just the bribes to sway you to the steampunk side!
First, these links will answer some of your questions and help you get around this huge post, especially if you are new to DABWAHA and voting.
Round Two runs from Friday morning, March 18th at 12:00 AM to Saturday night, March 19th at 11:59 PM (all times are Central U.S.) Over those two days, there will be four voting sessions — one session every 12 hours.
The actual voting time for The Iron Duke begins at 12 Noon (Central time) on Friday, March 18th, and runs until Midnight (Central)/10 PM Pacific.
HOW TO VOTE AND ENTER THE CONTEST
Friday, March 18th, beginning at 12 Noon (Central time, 10 AM Pacific), and ends at 12 Midnight (Central, 10 PM Pacific)
If you visit the DABWAHA site twice a day (morning & afternoon) you’ll probably be able to vote in all of the sessions. I will send out Twitter and Facebook notifications when the voting starts for The Iron Duke and shortly before the round ends.
Where to vote:
At the DABWAHA site.
Where do I enter the contest to win the bribe?
After you vote for The Iron Duke at the DABWAHA site, return to this spot and scroll down about an inch. You’ll see “The Voting Bribe,” which tells you what is being offered — and below that is a form for you to enter your name and e-mail address, so that I can contact you if your entry is picked as the winner.
Resembling March Madness, DABWAHA is a tournament between sixty-four books, including trash-talking, offering shameless bribes in order to get votes, and all kinds of craziness. It’s the one online poll where authors can troll for votes without looking like a total tool, and where trash-talking is encouraged among all participants.
The Voting Bribe
And, okay — I know this round is a tough one. Ilona is totally my BFF, and she and Gordon are fabulous wriiters, to boot. So I understand if you feel that a vote for my work is a vote against hers. But never fear! I have a way for you to feel better about voting against them. Check out the bribe for this round, and you’ll see that a vote for me will put Ilona’s books into some lucky reader’s hands. To an author, there’s simply nothing better than getting your work in front of a reader who loves your books … so you can vote for Meljean (right here at the tournament site!) and still support Ilona Andrews in an even more important way!
The Bribe: I’m giving away 2 sets of Ilona Andrews’s Edge series. Each vote for The Iron Duke is a chance to get these books into the hands of a reader who really, really needs to discover how awesome Ilona’s work is.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I enter if I’m outside the United States?
Of course! I’ll ship the bribe anywhere.
Do I need to be a tournament player/have a pick sheet to vote?
Not at all! Anyone can vote, even if you aren’t entered in the tournament. And if you have family, friends, a dog with his own e-mail address (and his own ISP) … have them come and vote, too! If they do, they can also enter my contest (and you can take the winnings from them privately.)
I heard you have a bribe notification service. Is that true?
Yes, it is. You can sign up here. Be aware, though, that I will only send out the notification shortly before each round of voting — I draw the line at spamming you with a newsletter each time the 12-hour voting period begins.
Operation DorkPower is my way of trying to reward all of the readers who put their faith in The Iron Duke to make it all the way to the winning spot of the tournament. You can read more about the how and why here, but the most important part is:
And so if THE IRON DUKE wins the tournament, I will pass on the author’s prize, the iPad2, to someone who voted for it.
If it wins, I will take those bribe contest entries, compile them, and pick a winner from all of those who voted for The Iron Duke and then entered the bribe contests at my blog. That means if you vote for the book in every round, you will have one entry to win per round.
Is your bracket a total loss and there’s no way you’ll win the grand prize? You’ve still got a chance to win an iPad, even if you didn’t pick The Iron Duke to win it all — you just have tovote for it, and then enter the bribe contest at my blog.
Does your momma need an iPad? Call her up and tell her to vote, too — and then send her over to my blog. I don’t care if she hasn’t read The Iron Duke or if she doesn’t like mantitty; I’ve got readers who need her to vote for it.
Do you have a different computer and internet connection at work and at home? Do you have a cell phone that can browse the internet? Then you can vote more than once (and this is totally kosher. In any other contest, it would make us assholes, but this is DABWAHA.)
OMG, this is serious bizness all of a sudden!
No, not really. DorkPower is all about having fun while kicking some ass. I’m not interested at all in tearing down any other authors or their books, because they are all awesome — I’m not interested in beating other books; it’s just about getting The Iron Duke to the next round on the strength of its AWESOME RED KRAKEN POWER.
I’ll do my best to make it worth your while, and maybe to laugh now and then, too, or to receive little extras for voting. And so … Operation DorkPower begins.
The Operation DorkPower Bribe
This bribe is designed to offer something to everyone — whether you’re familiar with my work or whether you’d like to try it, whether you’d like an early review copy of an upcoming book (not mine, sorry!), whether you just want $$ so that you can go buy your own books, or a one-of-a-kind item that you just can’t get very many other places. One person will win the prize of their choice from the following options:
First up is an Advance Review Copy of Amanda Quick’s upcoming hardcover release, QUICKSILVER. Here’s the description:
In the New York Times-bestselling author’s latest Arcane Society novel, a paranormal killer pushes an unlikely duo’s powers and passions to the limit.
Virginia Dean wakes at midnight beside a dead body, with a bloody knife in her hand and no memory of the evening’s events. Dark energy, emanating from the mirrors lining the room, overpowers her senses. With no apparent way in or out, she is rescued by a man she has met only once before, but won’t soon forget.
Owen Sweetwater inherited his family’s talent for hunting the psychical monsters who prey on London’s women and children, and his investigation into the deaths of two glass-readers has led him here. The high-society types of the exclusive Arcane Society would consider Virginia an illusionist, a charlatan, even a criminal, but Owen knows better. Virginia’s powers are real-and they just might be the key to solving this challenging case.
The second option in the DorkPower bribe is a copy of both BURNING UP and THE IRON DUKE, the two stories in my steampunk romance series, The Iron Seas. You can read more about these here.
The third option is a $20 gift card to your favorite online bookstore (unless it’s a store that doesn’t allow me to purchase gift cards online. If that happens, we’ll work it out.)
The fourth option is a set of four prints featuring my Iron Seas characters Mina, Rhys, Archimedes, and Yasmeen. These will be derived from the artwork that I’ve commissioned from silvertales (see example of her similar work) for my romance trading cards, and should be finished in June. The prints will be approximately 8×10, printed in full color, and mailed to you as soon as they are available.
To enter to win one of these bribes, you need to vote for The Iron Duke at the DABWAHA site, then post a link to DABWAHA (http://dabwaha.com) during The Iron Duke‘s 12-hour active voting period, with a request to vote for my book. Then return here, and fill out the following form:

Meljean will also contact the winners by e-mail; the winners need to reply with their mailing addresses so that Meljean can send the books to them. Only one entry per ISP address.
