Folk Remedies
So, a couple of days ago on Twitter, a celebrity who once played a space prostitute and then a lizard queen from space wondered:
Yes. It’s this: One heaping spoonful of granulated sugar, swallowed dry.
It works every time for my daughter and me, at least. And no, I have no idea why. A heaping spoonful of peanut butter usually does the same trick, but we rarely have peanut butter in the house. I grew up trying to scare myself, hold my breath, drink a ton of water all at once … but the sugar works.
So, I’m curious — what works for you? Not just hiccups, but little things that you really don’t expect to do anything, and people wonder if you’re just giving them an old wives’ tale*?

*When I first married my husband, my in-laws totally freaked out when they saw me eat a tuna salad sandwich followed by a glass of milk, because they’d always heard that tuna and milk mixed would create white spots all over your skin. Either that’s totally false, or — because I grew up chasing tuna salad with milk — it totally explains why I’m so blindingly white all over.
And, just because, more celebrity twitter fun with a YouTube video of Amanda Palmer singing the year’s best celebrity tweets. NSFW because of language.
