Gender-Targeted Marketing
So, the Old Spice guy is back.
I love these commercials. They’re awesomely funny, and have such a great awareness of just exactly who does the shopping for a lot of guys: their girlfriends/wives (or, for the younger dudes, their mothers). Sure, there are a lot of single guys out there who are buying their own deodorant (see Axe commercials for a different targeted audience) but it’s impossible to discount the buying power of the woman who has to smell a guy, day-in and day-out … not just on the date.
And you can also tell that certain things aren’t marketed to women at all, even though women would be just as invested in the … performance of a product. One obvious example:
Ecstasy! That’s sounds great! But let’s take a closer look at that slogan:
I can see why that’s a plus to a man. But believe me, Trojan … when there’s a bit of action going on, the last thing that a woman wants to think is “It feels like there’s nothing there!”
So, ladies (and the few guys that swing by) — can you think of any items-for-guys where the marketing is targeted toward women, instead? And have there been any items where the marketing would completely turn you off?
