I'm getting old.
Today (or I guess yesterday, since it’s after midnight) was my dad’s 60th b-day. Happy Birthday, Dad! This year I’ll be 30, so I guess I’m the same age as he was when I was born. That seemed more important at 2:00pm today when I was driving down to his house, like there was something interesting to say about that, but now I’m tired and can’t remember what it was. It probably wasn’t as cool as I thought it was anyway.
Oh, and I took him a banana cream pie (I bought it, I didn’t make it, which is really a good thing, trust me) and then forgot to eat a piece when I was there. Now, I wish I had some, because it looked really yummy.
I also came back with a huge bag full of books that I stole from their house. Half westerns, because of the WIP, a few romances (a couple of re-reads, like Linda Howard’s SIM, LOVING EVANGELINE, which I know I read way back when (because DUNCAN’S BRIDE is on my keeper shelf, and I remember reading LE in Alaska around 1995 and was really excited that they were connected, but for the life of me can’t remember a thing about it) a few other LHs, a Ginna Gray book, WHERE ANGELS FEAR, which is a reprint of an SIM, and which I remember made me bawl (I like that, and I’ll report back if it does again), and some that will be new-to-me (if not new, new) — a few trad regencies (including a couple of Carla Kellys and a Heyer which I haven’t yet read), an older Lorraine Heath, a couple of HPs, including a Carole Mortimer, whose books are a massive guilty pleasure, and Jo Beverley’s FORBIDDEN MAGIC, which I’m starting as soon as I’m done with this post. I’m hoping these will break my reading slump.
I also found (but didn’t bring home) the SIM of GET LUCKY, and told my mom that if she sent a SASE to Brockmann, she could get that happy-face-sticker to go over the hero’s face on the cover. Now I wonder if I should have brought it home and tried to sell it on eBay.
On the writing front, copy-edits went out this week for DEMON MOON. I rearranged a few scenes, added in a scene that was more difficult to write than I expected. I like what it does for the story but … anyway, it wasn’t easy, and I don’t know that I hit exactly the right note I wanted. But with time, I’ll be able to be more objective about it (and when I go over the galleys and read the story again as a whole, instead of broken up and with the original version strongly in my mind, I’ll be able to see if it fits in right or if I just totally effed up with that revision.) I also realized when looking over a .pdf advanced reader’s copy that I made that I’d accidentally introduced a continuity error (something happens twice (off-screen) and is mentioned on two different days as if it just happened) in those heavily rearranged sections. It’ll be an easy fix, but it was still a *headdesk* moment.
I also forgot to add my dedication/acknowledgment page. I did that with DEMON ANGEL, too, and had to e-mail it to my editor the next day. I don’t know if I will on this one, or wait until DEMON NIGHT, because adding another page to DEMON MOON can’t be a good thing.
I forgot a dedication in HOT SPELL and WILD THING, too. Sigh. I’m not really ungrateful, just scatterbrained.
