Just shoot me now (also, RWA and a giveaway).
I’m not against re-makes. I loved the Battlestar Galactica remake, for example. It seems like DC remakes/reboots my favorite superheroes every few years, and I stick with them — and most of the time, I find something to enjoy. Foreign movies are often remade into American ones. I’m willing to give most remakes a shot, and to see what time and/or a new perspective have brought to the table.
But some remakes, I don’t get. One was Psycho, which featured a shot-for-shot remake of the classic. Why? And then there’s the latest, Footloose, which doesn’t look like a shot-for-shot remake, but is pretty darn close.
*headdesk*
This is where I start chanting my mantra that I usually save for jerks complaining about some genre or something: If you don’t like it, you don’t have to go see it/read it. This time, I’m the jerk. But, jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezus. Footloose? Really? Sigh. At least actors and crew were paid and it stimulates the economy or whatever.
Okay, also: Next week is the RWA National Conference. I’m going as a tourist/reader rather than an attendee, but I’m still going to meet up with friends and sign books during the Berkley signing and
HOLY CRAP I JUST LOOKED AT THE RWA SITE AND REALIZED THAT CAROLE MORTIMER IS GOING TO BE AT THE LITERACY SIGNING! MY FIRST ROMANCE, YOU GUYS. I’M TAKING IT WITH ME TO HAVE IT SIGNED.
Ahem. As I was saying, I’ll be signing stuff and giving away lots of romance trading cards — primarily, these, which I commissioned from the awesome Kitsune. You can see the backs of Mina’s and Rhys’s cards here (scroll down a little way — it’s alphabetical by last name.)
But! I know that a lot of you aren’t going to be anywhere near New York next week, so I thought I’d give you a chance to win a set of four cards here. All you have to do is leave a comment before Midnight, June 30th — but if you want to lament/praise a remake, please feel free!
I’ll be giving away thirty (30) sets of four, so you’ve got a good chance of winning.
The small print: Comment before 6/30/2011 at Midnight, Pacific Time to be entered to win a set of four (4) Iron Seas trading cards. Thirty entrants will be selected to win using random.org, and the winners’ names will be posted on this blog by 7/15/2011. Meljean will also contact the winners by e-mail; the winners need to reply with their mailing addresses so that Meljean can send the cards to them. Only one entry per ISP address. International entries are welcome. No purchase necessary to enter. Odds of winning depend on number of entries received. Void where prohibited.
I will attempt to post the winners in next week’s blog post, but honestly, I’m not sure what my connection will be like in the hotel.
